Travel
We’re so grateful to those traveling to celebrate with us!
If flying, the closest airport is in Duluth, Minnesota, which is about a 1.5-hour drive from Ashland, WI. The other option is the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport which is the cheaper option but a 3.5-hour drive from Ashland, WI.
Ashland, WI and the surrounding area offer a variety of places to stay.
Visit this link for great options!
We recommend booking early, as accommodations can fill up quickly with Apple Festival weekend and a local race happening at the same time.
There are also several vacation rentals available in the area through AirBnB and Vrbo.
Our Story
In August 2024, PJ was visiting Hawai’i for a mutual friend’s wedding. Our friends thought we would hit it off—and they were right!
At the time, Lexie was living in Hawaii working as a faculty member at the University of Hawai‘i and PJ was stationed in California, but from the moment we met, there was an easy certainty between us.
Not long after, PJ invited Lexie to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in San Diego. Which turned out to be an unforgettable first weekend together.
What followed was endless phone calls and a string of adventures: a ski weekend in Big Bear, CA, a trip to Yuma, AZ, hometown visits, a road trip from Michigan to California, and a trip to Hawai‘i. Somewhere along the way, it became clear—we had found our person.
PJ and Lexie got engaged in Bryce Canyon National Park, UT and eloped in Big Bear Lake, CA (check out our wedding video below!).
After our visit home, PJ will help Lexie move to Japan, and we’re SO excited to finally share everyday life in the same country and time zone! :D
Things to do:
If you’re turning this into a full weekend getaway (highly recommend), there’s a lot to enjoy in the area the weekend after our celebration:
BAYFIELD APPLE FESTIVAL:
Held October 2–4, 2026, in downtown Bayfield, this fall festival is all about celebrating the harvest season. You’ll find food, live music at Memorial Park, a carnival, and a grand parade to close out the weekend.
You can also head out to the surrounding orchards for apple picking, fresh cider, baked goods, and even hayrides.

RED CLAY CLASSIC:
Happening October 2–3, 2026, at ABC Raceway in Ashland, the Red Clay Classic is a dirt track race with over 200 drivers competing all weekend. Even if you’re not a racing person, it’s a fun, high-energy way to experience something local—cheer from the stands, take it all in, and enjoy the excitement.
WISCONSIN LAKE SUPERIOR SCENIC BYWAY:
Take a scenic drive along the Lake Superior Byway to experience stunning fall colors along the shoreline, with sweeping lake views and charming small-town stops along the way.
